Now, imagine that all of the people around you are wearing masks. You can\u2019t see their facial expressions and what they are saying is muffled. Individuals who have difficulty with communication often do better when they can take information from all aspects of their interaction with others and piece together the clues. But when others are wearing a mask, the ability to see a huge percentage of nonverbal language that comes from that section of their face is eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, individuals with autism often do better with routine, and right now,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/2020\/04\/coronavirus-pandemic-autism-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that has changed entirely<\/a>. In addition, those living in a residential treatment facility or group home cannot visit with their family. Add to all this an entirely new vocabulary of words they have never heard before \u2013 \u201csocial distancing,\u201d \u201cquarantine,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"autolink\" href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/topic\/corona-virus-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"autolink\" href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/topic\/corona-virus-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus<\/a>.\u201d This could be a recipe for confusion which can lead to fear and\u00a0<a class=\"autolink\" href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/topic\/anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety<\/a>, and all the natural coping behaviors\u00a0 \u2014 some positive, others not so positive \u2014 that go along with them.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/2020\/04\/autism-communication-challenges-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*This article was originally published on The Mighty.
