As a behavioral healthcare provider, I was fascinated by a recent study in the journal Science<\/a>, which discovered common genetic activity in the brains of 700 individuals who suffered from autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and alcoholism. I couldn\u2019t agree more with Daniel Geschwind, a neurogeneticist at the University of California\u00a0at\u00a0Los Angeles and a leader of the study: \u201cWe\u2019re on the threshold to using genomics and molecular technology to look at [mental illness] in a way we\u2019ve never been able to do before.\u201d<\/p>\n

I think it\u2019s important to note, though, that \u201cthe threshold\u201d is still not \u201cinside the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hope this latest research bring us what we all want – a manner in which we can eradicate chronic and debilitating mental illness. But I also hope that we remember where we came from and are, therefore, duly cautious.<\/p>\n
